The term "Big 5" was originally coined by big-game hunters to describe the five most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa: the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Today, the term has been reclaimed by the tourism industry to represent Africa's most iconic wildlife viewing experiences. ## The Lion The lion is the most social of all big cats, living in prides that can number up to 30 individuals. Despite being called the "King of the Jungle," lions actually prefer open savanna and grasslands. **Best places to see:** Kruger, Pilanesberg, Chobe. ## The Leopard The most elusive of the Big 5, leopards are solitary, nocturnal hunters known for their incredible strength and stealth. **Best places to see:** Sabi Sands (near Kruger), South Luangwa (Zambia), Pilanesberg. ## The Elephant The largest land animal, known for their intelligence, empathy and complex social bonds. **Best places to see:** Chobe (Botswana), Kruger, Addo Elephant Park. ## The Buffalo Often underestimated, the Cape buffalo is considered the most dangerous of the Big 5 due to its unpredictable temperament. **Best places to see:** Kruger, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Pilanesberg. ## The Rhino Both black and white rhino species are critically threatened by poaching. Seeing a rhino in the wild is both a privilege and a reminder of the urgent need for conservation. **Best places to see:** Kruger, Pilanesberg, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi.
