The Okavango Delta in Botswana is one of the natural wonders of the world. This vast inland delta, formed where the Okavango River fans out across the Kalahari Desert, creates a unique wetland ecosystem that supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the delta covers approximately 20,000 square kilometres and transforms seasonally as flood waters from Angola's highlands arrive between June and August, turning dry grasslands into a network of crystal-clear channels, lagoons, and islands.
The Mokoro Experience
Traversing the delta in a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) is one of Africa's most iconic safari experiences. Gliding silently through lily-covered channels, you may encounter hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and an astounding variety of birdlife. It is an intimate, peaceful way to experience the African wilderness.
Wildlife
The Okavango Delta is home to some of the healthiest wildlife populations in Africa. Large herds of buffalo, elephant, and zebra roam the floodplains, while lions, leopards, and wild dogs hunt in the surrounding grasslands. The delta is also one of the last strongholds of the endangered African wild dog.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season (May to October) is optimal for game viewing as animals concentrate around permanent water sources. The flood season (June to August) is magical for mokoro trips and birdwatching, with over 400 species recorded.
