One of the most common questions we receive at Bakubung Safaris is whether guests should visit Pilanesberg or Kruger. The honest answer? It depends on your time, budget and what kind of safari experience you're looking for.
Pilanesberg Game Reserve
Best for: Day trips from Johannesburg, families with young children, first-time safari-goers
Distance from Johannesburg: 2 hours
Malaria risk: None
Big 5: Yes — all five are present
Pros: Close to Johannesburg, malaria-free, volcanic crater landscape is stunning, Sun City is nearby for a combo trip
Cons: Smaller reserve, can feel crowded on weekends, fewer overall species than Kruger
Kruger National Park
Best for: Serious wildlife enthusiasts, multi-day safaris, photographers
Distance from Johannesburg: 4-5 hours
Malaria risk: Low to moderate (precautions recommended)
Big 5: Yes — excellent sightings
Pros: Vast wilderness, incredible biodiversity, multiple ecosystems, world-class lodges, fewer crowds in remote areas
Cons: Further from Johannesburg, malaria zone, requires more time
Our Recommendation
If you have only one day, choose Pilanesberg. If you have 2-3 days or more, Kruger is the superior choice. And if you have the luxury of time, do both!
