Travel TipsPackingSafari Guide
Packing for a safari requires careful consideration. The right gear can make the difference between a comfortable adventure and an uncomfortable one. Here is our comprehensive packing guide based on years of experience.
Clothing
Neutral earth tones (khaki, olive, brown, beige) are essential. Bright colours can startle wildlife and white shows dust. Pack layers — mornings and evenings in the bush can be surprisingly cold, especially during winter months (May-September). A warm fleece, a windbreaker, and a wide-brimmed hat are must-haves.
Footwear
Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes are essential for bush walks. Sandals are fine for lounging at the lodge. Avoid new shoes — break them in before your trip.
Camera Gear
A camera with a minimum 200mm zoom lens is recommended. A 100-400mm lens is ideal for wildlife photography. Bring extra memory cards and batteries, as charging opportunities may be limited in remote camps.
Binoculars
A good pair of binoculars (8x42 or 10x42) transforms the safari experience, bringing distant animals and birds into sharp detail.
Health & Safety
Sunscreen (SPF 50+), insect repellent with DEET, and any prescription medications are essential. Consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis if visiting Kruger or other malaria areas. Pilanesberg is malaria-free.
Other Essentials
A headlamp or torch, a reusable water bottle, a daypack, and a power bank for charging devices. Most lodges have charging facilities but access to sockets can be limited.
