Kruger National ParkSafari GuideBig 5South AfricaFirst-Time Safari
Kruger National Park is Africa's most iconic safari destination, and for good reason. Spanning nearly 2 million hectares across South Africa's northeastern border, Kruger is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife including the legendary Big 5 — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
## When to Visit Kruger
The dry winter months (May to September) are widely considered the best time for game viewing. Vegetation is sparse, and animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. However, the wet summer months (October to March) bring lush green landscapes, migrant birds and newborn animals.
## Getting to Kruger from Johannesburg
Kruger is approximately 4-5 hours' drive from Johannesburg. The most popular entrance gates are Phabeni, Paul Kruger and Numbi gates near the southern section. Alternatively, you can fly to Skukuza Airport or KMIA (Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport).
## Big 5 Spotting Tips
Lions are often found resting near roads in the early morning. Elephants frequent river crossings and waterholes. Leopards are best spotted at dawn or dusk in tree canopies along rivers. Rhinos prefer open grasslands, while buffalo herds are common in the southern section.
## What to Pack
Binoculars are essential. Bring neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, brown), a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and a good camera with a zoom lens. Mornings can be cold in winter, so layer up.
