Packing for an African safari requires careful planning. The right gear can make the difference between a comfortable, memorable experience and a frustrating one. Here's our complete packing checklist, refined over 8 years of hosting international guests.

Clothing

  • Neutral colours: Khaki, olive, tan, brown (avoid bright colours that scare wildlife and dark blue/black that attract tsetse flies)
  • Layering system: Mornings on safari can be cold (5-10°C in winter), while afternoons are warm (25-30°C)
  • Long sleeves and trousers: Protection from sun, insects and thorny bushes
  • Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking shoes (closed-toe for bush walks)
  • Warm fleece or jacket for open-vehicle game drives

Camera & Optics

  • Camera with zoom lens (200-400mm ideal for wildlife)
  • Binoculars (8x42 or 10x42 recommended)
  • Extra batteries and memory cards
  • Beanbag for stabilising camera on vehicle

Health & Safety

  • Malaria prophylaxis (if visiting Kruger or lowveld areas)
