The very best trips are never bought off a shelf. They are built. A tailor-made tour starts with a conversation about who you are and what moves you, and ends with an itinerary that could belong to nobody else. That is the way we have always worked at Bakubung Safaris & Tours, and it is why we put this list together — not a list of tickets to buy, but ten of the most rewarding custom journeys we design across South Africa, each one endlessly adaptable to your dates, your budget and your pace.
Mix them, stretch them, combine two or three into a single grand loop — the only rule is that the trip should feel like yours. Here are our top ten tailor-made custom tours for 2026.

1. Private Big 5 Safari in the Kruger
The one almost everyone wants, and for good reason. We build private Kruger and Greater Kruger safaris around your wishlist — leopards for the photographers, elephants for the children, a quiet sundowner for the couples. Fly in from Johannesburg, stay in a lodge chosen specifically for you, and drive in a vehicle that is yours alone. Add a walking safari, a night drive, or a stay in a private concession for total exclusivity.
From R9,500 per person for a 3-day private safari.
2. Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula
Table Mountain, the colourful Bo-Kaap, Cape Point where two oceans appear to meet, and the penguins at Boulders Beach. A tailor-made Cape Town tour lets you balance the icons with the hidden corners — a Constantia wine estate lunch, a sea-kayak past seals, a sunset from Signal Hill, or a day trip to the Cape Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
Watch: Cape Town from Above
Custom city breaks from R2,500 per person per day.
3. The Garden Route
One of the world's great road trips, from Cape Town through Knysna and Plettenberg Bay to the forests of Tsitsikamma and the elephants of Addo. We handle the flights, the car or the private guide, and the accommodation, so all you have to do is enjoy the drive and the ocean views. Perfect on its own or as the coastal half of a longer safari-and-sea itinerary.
7-day custom Garden Route journeys from R18,000 per person.
4. Soweto Cultural Tour
No trip to Johannesburg is complete without Soweto — Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners; the moving Hector Pieterson Memorial; and a shared meal with a local family. We tailor the depth and pace to you, from a half-day highlights tour to a full immersive day including the Orlando Towers and a township lunch.
From R1,962 per person.
5. The Apartheid Museum & Constitution Hill
For travellers who want to truly understand South Africa, we pair the world-renowned Apartheid Museum with Constitution Hill, led by a guide who brings the history to life rather than simply reciting it. It is powerful, essential, and one of the experiences our guests tell us stayed with them long after they went home.

Guided, with transport, from R1,530 per person.
6. Pilanesberg Day Safari
The perfect Big 5 fix when time is short. Two hours from Johannesburg, malaria-free, and set in an ancient volcanic crater. We collect you at dawn and have you watching elephants and rhino before the day has properly begun — back in the city by evening with a camera full of memories.
Full-day from R2,682 per person.
7. Pretoria & Jacaranda City Tour
South Africa's handsome capital is criminally overlooked by visitors. We tailor tours around the Union Buildings and the giant Nelson Mandela statue, the Voortrekker Monument, Church Square, and — if you time it for October and November — entire streets turned purple with jacaranda blossom. It pairs beautifully with a Cradle of Humankind morning.

Half-day custom tours from R1,600 per person.
8. The Panorama Route & Blyde River Canyon
Often combined with a Kruger safari, the Panorama Route is one of the most spectacular drives in Africa — the vast Blyde River Canyon (one of the largest green canyons on earth), God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, and a string of waterfalls. We build it as a scenic two-day add-on to your safari or as a journey in its own right.

2-day custom tours from R6,500 per person.
9. Cradle of Humankind
A UNESCO World Heritage Site on Johannesburg's doorstep, where the story of humanity begins. We tailor visits to the Sterkfontein Caves — where the famous fossils "Mrs Ples" and "Little Foot" were found — and the interactive Maropeng centre, for families, history-lovers and the simply curious alike.
Half-day from R1,782 per person.
10. The Grand Tour — South Africa in One Journey
Our signature bespoke itinerary for travellers who want it all: Johannesburg and Soweto, a Big 5 safari in the Kruger or Pilanesberg, Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, and the Garden Route — woven together with domestic flights and private transfers into one seamless trip of a lifetime. It is the itinerary we are proudest of, and no two versions are ever the same.
Fully custom, from R45,000 per person.

How Much Does a Tailor-Made Tour Cost?
Because every custom tour is different, so is the price — but we are always upfront about it. A half-day city or cultural tour starts from around R1,500 per person; a full-day Big 5 safari from around R2,682; and multi-day journeys are quoted per person once we know your lodges and dates. There is no charge for a proposal, and no obligation to book.
Best Time to Visit South Africa
South Africa is a superb year-round destination. For safaris, the dry winter (May to September) offers the best game viewing. For Cape Town and the Garden Route, the summer months (November to March) bring warm, beach-perfect weather. Spring (September to November) is glorious countrywide — mild, colourful, and the season of the Pretoria jacarandas and the Cape wildflowers. Whatever your dates, we will build the trip to match the season.
Getting Around: How the Logistics Work
One of the biggest advantages of a tailor-made tour is that the tiring part — the moving between places — is invisible to you. Within South Africa we use a combination of comfortable private vehicles for shorter hops and quick domestic flights for the long legs, so a single trip can easily take in Johannesburg, the Kruger and Cape Town without a single wasted day. Airport meet-and-greets, luggage, check-ins and timing are all handled by us. You travel with an FGASA-qualified guide on your safaris and knowledgeable local guides in the cities, and you can reach us on WhatsApp at any point in your journey if plans need to shift. It is the freedom of independent travel with none of the stress.
Can I Combine Several of These Tours?
Absolutely — and most of our guests do exactly that. The real magic of tailor-made travel is in the stitching together. A classic two-week itinerary might open with Johannesburg, Soweto and the Apartheid Museum, move on to a Big 5 safari in the Kruger with the Panorama Route, and finish with Cape Town and a few days on the Garden Route. A shorter week could pair a Pilanesberg safari with the Cradle of Humankind and a day in Pretoria. Because we handle the domestic flights, transfers and timing ourselves, the joins are seamless — you simply move from one highlight to the next while we take care of everything in between.
What Our Guests Say
The compliment we hear most often is that the trip felt personal — that it was clearly built by people who knew the country rather than pulled from a catalogue. Guests tell us about the guide who remembered their child's name, the lodge upgrade that arrived as a surprise, the quiet viewpoint that was not on any schedule. That is the standard we hold ourselves to on every single custom tour, whether it is a half-day in the city or a three-week odyssey across the whole country.
