Ask ten people what Johannesburg is, and you will get ten different answers. The richest square mile in Africa. The city that gold built. The place where apartheid was fought and beaten. The gateway to the Big Five. A tangle of highways and shopping malls. A jacaranda-purple skyline in spring.
They are all right. And that is exactly why planning a trip here is so hard.
I have been running tours out of this city since 2018, and the question I get more than any other is a simple one: "We only have a few days — what do we actually do?" This guide is my honest answer. Not a list of everything that exists, but the ten tours and packages I would book for my own family if they were flying in tomorrow — ranked, explained, and told straight.

Every package below comes with free hotel or guesthouse pickup across Johannesburg, Sandton and Pretoria, a professional guide who actually lives here, and a vehicle you will not be ashamed to be seen in. We keep groups small on purpose. If you want the exact itinerary and dates, tell us what you are after on our plan-my-safari page and we will build it around you.
1. The full-day Pilanesberg Big Five safari
If you do one thing from this list, make it this one. Two and a half hours north of the city, inside the crater of a long-dead volcano, sits a malaria-free reserve where lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard all roam free. You leave your hotel before sunrise, and by mid-morning you are watching a breeding herd of elephant cross the road in front of your vehicle.
What makes Pilanesberg special for a day trip is simple: you do not need to fly anywhere, you do not need malaria tablets, and you can still tick off the Big Five in a single day. For first-timers and families it is the obvious choice, which is why it tops almost every honest list of Johannesburg experiences. We cover the full day in detail in our guide to the Pilanesberg day and overnight packages, and if you are weighing it against the big one, our one-day Pilanesberg safari — is it worth it? piece lays it out without the sales talk.

2. The Soweto and Apartheid Museum day
You cannot understand South Africa without Soweto. This is where the 1976 uprising started, where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu lived on the same street, and where a generation decided that enough was enough. A good Soweto tour is not a sad history lesson — it is loud, warm, full of music and street food and people who will happily argue with you about football.
We usually pair it with the Apartheid Museum, which is still, in my opinion, the most powerful museum on the continent. Morning in Soweto, lunch at a shisanyama, afternoon at the museum — it is a heavy, unforgettable, genuinely moving day. Because Soweto has become our second-biggest request after safari, we have built a complete Soweto tours and packages guide that covers every option in depth, and you can book the Soweto tour directly here.

3. The Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Caves
About 50 minutes from Sandton, in a quiet valley of grass and dolomite, is the place where we all come from. The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Sterkfontein Caves beneath it have given up more early-human fossils than anywhere else on earth — including "Mrs Ples" and "Little Foot".
Standing in the cave where a two-million-year-old relative of yours was found does something to you. It is a brilliant half-day on its own, and it combines beautifully with the Lion Park (see below) for a full day that swings from deep history to living wildlife. Our guides walk you through exactly what you will see underground — and handle every detail from hotel pickup to drop-off.
4. The Lion & Safari Park open-jeep predator experience
This one surprises people. Just under an hour from the city, you climb into an open safari jeep and drive straight into the predator enclosures — lions, rare white lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs, close enough to make your heart hammer. Then you move on to the free-roaming area for giraffe, zebra and antelope.
It is the single best option if you are short on time but desperate to see big cats, and it is a hit with families and photographers alike. I wrote a full, first-person account of what the day is actually like in the Lion Park jeep predator experience — read that before you book and you will know exactly what you are in for.

5. The private Johannesburg city and street-art tour
For years nobody wanted to tour the inner city. That has flipped completely. Today Maboneng, Braamfontein and Newtown are some of the most exciting creative districts in Africa — rooftop markets, galleries, murals the size of buildings, and coffee that holds its own against anywhere.
A private city tour is the move here, because a good local guide turns a street of graffiti into a story about who painted it and why. We take you through Constitution Hill — the old prison where Mandela and Gandhi were both held, now the seat of the country's highest court — and finish somewhere with a cold drink and a view. It is the tour that most changes how visitors feel about Joburg itself.

6. Lesedi Cultural Village
South Africa has eleven official languages and a lot more cultures than that. Lesedi, about 45 minutes out of the city, is where you meet several of them in one afternoon — Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele homesteads, traditional dancing that you will feel in your chest, and a hearty African feast at the end.
It can tip touristy if you go with the wrong operator, so we keep it genuine and unhurried. Paired with the Cradle of Humankind it makes a rich "roots and culture" day. Chat to us on WhatsApp and we will build a Cradle-and-Lesedi combo day for you.
7. The luxury private tailor-made package
Some guests do not want a fixed menu — they want the whole thing built around them. A honeymoon that starts in the city and ends in the bush. A family reunion with three generations and very different energy levels. A corporate group that needs it to run like clockwork.
That is where our private, tailor-made packages come in: your own vehicle, your own guide, your own pace, and extras most day tours cannot touch — sundowners on a rocky overlook, a private chef, an overnight at a lodge. If exclusivity matters to you, start with our private safari tours from Johannesburg and we will take it from there.
8. The Hartbeespoort day: Elephant Sanctuary and cableway
An hour west of the city, where the Magaliesberg mountains meet a big blue dam, Hartbeespoort is the easy, scenic day out. The highlight is the Elephant Sanctuary, where you walk trunk-in-hand with rescued elephants and learn how they are cared for — an experience that lands equally well with kids and grandparents.
Add the aerial cableway for a view over the whole valley, a stroll around the dam, and lunch at a waterside restaurant, and you have a gentle, feel-good day that is a world away from the intensity of a museum tour.
9. The Johannesburg food and township-flavours tour
Joburg eats well. Really well. From bunny chow and boerewors rolls to kota sandwiches in Soweto and fine African fusion in Sandton, the food scene here has quietly become one of the best on the continent. Our foodie tours move through markets, street vendors and a sit-down meal, with the stories of the people cooking it woven in.
It is the perfect second or third day — lighter than a full safari, but it gets you closer to how the city actually lives than almost anything else.
10. The Gold Reef City and mine-history day
Johannesburg exists because of gold, full stop. Gold Reef City is built on an old mine, and alongside the theme-park rides you can go underground into a real shaft and watch a live gold pour. For families with kids who have had enough of museums, it is a release valve — history and adrenaline in one place. Pair it with a quick stop at the nearby Apartheid Museum (they share a precinct) and you have covered both the fun and the serious in a single day.
How to choose — and how to combine
Here is the honest shortcut. If you have one day, do Pilanesberg or Soweto-plus-Apartheid-Museum. If you have two, do both. With a third day, add the Lion Park, the Cradle, or the city and food tours depending on whether you are travelling with wildlife lovers, history lovers or foodies.
Most of our guests combine two or three of these into a seamless package, and that is where a local operator earns its keep — getting the order right, the timing right, and the driving between them as painless as possible. If you are flying in and tight on time, our guide for international visitors covers the logistics end to end.
Why book these with Bakubung
We are a Johannesburg-based, owner-run operator, not a call centre reselling someone else's seats. Every tour on this list we run ourselves or with partners we have worked with for years. You get free hotel pickup, small groups, guides who grew up here, and a real person on the other end of the phone when your flight is delayed and the plan needs to shift.
We have carried honeymooners, school reunions, film crews, solo travellers and families with grandparents and toddlers in the same vehicle — and the thing they tell us afterwards is always the same: it felt personal, not packaged.
