Option 1: Self-Drive (The Classic Road Trip)
Driving from Johannesburg to Kruger is one of South Africa's great road trips. The route takes you from the highveld plateau, through the dramatic Mpumalanga escarpment, and down into the lowveld bushveld — a landscape shift that feels like entering another world.
The Main Route: N4 East via Nelspruit
Distance: 420–480 km (depending on which gate you are heading to) Drive time: 4–5.5 hours (depending on traffic and gate) Road quality: Excellent — national highway all the way, mostly dual carriageway
Route breakdown:
- Johannesburg to eMalahleni (Witbank) — 1.5 hours via the N4 East. Mostly highway through industrial areas. Good fuel stops at eMalahleni.
- eMalahleni to Nelspruit (Mbombela) — 2 hours continuing on the N4. The scenery transforms dramatically as you drop off the highveld escarpment into subtropical lowveld. Stop at Waterval Boven for coffee and the view.
- Nelspruit to Kruger Gates — 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on gate:
- Malelane Gate: 1 hour south of Nelspruit (closest gate, access to southern Kruger)
- Numbi Gate: 1.5 hours via White River/Hazyview (access to Pretoriuskop area)

- If you are staying at a Sabi Sands or Timbavati lodge, they usually arrange transfers from KMIA or Hoedspruit as part of your package

What to Pack for Kruger

Vodacom and MTN coverage exists around most rest camps and along the main tarred roads, but it is patchy on gravel roads and in the northern sections. Do not rely on GPS data — download offline maps before you leave Johannesburg. The SANParks app works offline and is very useful.
