05:00 – 05:30 | Pick-Up in Johannesburg
We collect you from your hotel, guesthouse, or OR Tambo Airport in the pre-dawn darkness. Coffee and snacks are waiting in the vehicle. The city is still sleeping.
05:30 – 07:30 | The Drive North
The route takes us northwest on the N4 highway toward Rustenburg. As the sun rises over the highveld, the landscape shifts from Johannesburg's urban sprawl to open grasslands, then to the rocky bushveld hills of the North West Province. It is a comfortable, easy drive on good roads.
07:30 | Gate Entry – The Safari Begins
We enter through Bakgatla Gate on Pilanesberg's northern side (or Manyane Gate on the east, depending on the day). The moment you pass through the gate, you are in the bush. The road drops into the volcanic crater, and within minutes the first sightings begin.
07:30 – 12:00 | Morning Game Drive
The morning drive is the heart of the safari. We spend 4–4.5 hours driving through the reserve, following a route that our guides have refined over years of experience.
What you are likely to see:
Mankwe Dam is our first major stop — the huge central dam that is the lifeblood of Pilanesberg. Hippos surface and blow, fish eagles call from the dead trees, crocodiles bask on the banks, and in the dry season, elephants wade in to drink and play. On a good morning, you might see elephant, hippo, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and warthog all from this single viewpoint.
From Mankwe, we work the western and southern loops, where the volcanic hills funnel wildlife into concentrated corridors. The western roads are particularly good for white rhino — they graze the open grasslands in small groups, often close to the road. Pilanesberg has one of the best white rhino populations in South Africa.
Lion sightings are less predictable but thrilling when they happen. Pilanesberg's prides are healthy and active, and our guides know their territories and movement patterns. On roughly half of our day trips we find lions — sometimes on a kill, sometimes lounging in the road, sometimes stalking prey through the long grass.
Leopard is the toughest Big Five tick in Pilanesberg (as in most reserves). Sightings happen perhaps once every 5–8 trips — but when they do, they are unforgettable.
12:00 – 13:00 | Lunch Break
We stop at one of the designated picnic sites or at the Pilanesberg Centre for lunch. Meals are either packed (provided by us) or available at the centre's restaurant. Toilets, shade, and a chance to stretch your legs. Some picnic spots overlook waterholes where game viewing continues even during lunch.
13:00 – 15:30 | Afternoon Game Drive
The afternoon drive covers different areas of the park. As the heat of midday fades, animals become active again. This is often when we find the big cats — lions and cheetah start moving as the temperature drops.
The eastern loops and Lengau Dam area are afternoon favourites. Elephants often cross the road in large breeding herds in the late afternoon, and the light becomes golden and beautiful for photography.
15:30 – 16:00 | Exit the Park
We head for the gate before closing time (17:30 in winter, 18:30 in summer). The last stretch often produces one more surprise sighting.
16:00 – 18:30 | Return to Johannesburg
The drive back is relaxed, often with the vehicle buzzing about the day's sightings. We drop you back at your accommodation or at the airport, perfectly timed for an evening flight.

Pilanesberg vs The Alternatives
People sometimes ask about other "safari" options near Johannesburg. Let me be honest about the alternatives:
Lion & Safari Park (Broederstroom)
- Distance: 45 minutes from Joburg
- What it is: A privately owned wildlife park with captive-bred lions. You can drive through enclosures.
- Our take: It is a nice outing with kids, but it is NOT a real safari. The animals are in enclosures, not wild. If you want an authentic Big Five experience, Pilanesberg is in a completely different league.
Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre (De Wildt)
- Distance: 1 hour from Joburg
- What it is: A conservation breeding centre for cheetah, wild dog, and other endangered species.
- Our take: Excellent for conservation education, but again, not a wild safari experience.
Dinokeng Game Reserve
- Distance: 1 hour north of Joburg
- What it is: A free-roaming Big Five reserve north of Pretoria.
- Our take: Dinokeng is developing nicely but is much newer than Pilanesberg, with lower animal densities and less established infrastructure. Pilanesberg is the superior experience for a day trip.
Kruger National Park
- Distance: 4–5.5 hours from Joburg
- What it is: The world-class option.
- Our take: Kruger is magnificent but a day trip is not realistic — you would spend more time driving than game viewing. Kruger needs a minimum 2-night stay. Pilanesberg is the clear winner for a single day.
When to Go
Best time: The dry winter months (May to September) offer the best game viewing as vegetation thins and animals concentrate at water. But honestly, Pilanesberg is excellent year-round.
Avoid: Long weekends and school holidays if you want quiet roads. The park gets busy with day-trippers from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Mid-week visits are significantly quieter.
Weather tip: Pilanesberg can be cold in winter mornings (5–10°C) and very hot in summer (35°C+). Dress in layers and bring sunscreen.
Is It Worth It? The Honest Verdict
Absolutely. Without hesitation. A Pilanesberg day safari is the single best day out you can have in South Africa. For less than R2,000, you get a genuine Big Five wilderness experience just two hours from Johannesburg, with no malaria risk, stunning scenery, and world-class wildlife.
Is it the same as spending three nights in Kruger? No. A multi-day Kruger safari is deeper, wilder, and more immersive. But for a single day? Pilanesberg is unbeatable. There is nowhere else on Earth where you can do this.
