You've got a layover in Johannesburg. Maybe eight hours, maybe a whole day, maybe an overnight before your connection. You're sitting in the terminal Googling "things to do near OR Tambo" and finding a lot of mediocre suggestions involving shopping malls and hotel pools.
Here's the thing nobody at the airport information desk will tell you: you are sitting less than two hours from a genuine Big Five safari. Lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopard โ the real thing, in the wild, not behind a fence. And you can do it, start to finish, and be back at the airport with time to spare.
I'm Thabo Makate, co-founder of Bakubung Africa Safaris & Tours. We collect international travellers from OR Tambo International Airport (and nearby hotels) every single week for exactly this kind of trip. Some of them planned it months in advance. Some of them WhatsApp'd us the night before. All of them came back saying it was the best decision they made in South Africa.
If you're reading this on your phone in the arrivals hall, stop scrolling. You've found your answer.

Yes, You Really Can Do a Safari on a Layover
The question I get asked most: "Is it actually possible? I only have X hours." The answer is almost always yes.
Here's why Johannesburg is uniquely placed for this. Unlike Nairobi or Cape Town, where the nearest Big Five reserves are a flight away, Johannesburg has genuine Big Five game reserves within one to three hours' drive. And all of them are malaria-free, so there's no medication to worry about.
The maths is simple:
- Dinokeng Game Reserve: approximately 1 hour from OR Tambo. Big Five, real wilderness, and you can be on a game drive by mid-morning even if you landed at dawn.
- Pilanesberg National Park: approximately 2.5 hours. An ancient volcanic crater teeming with Big Five. Our most-requested day trip.
We handle everything โ the airport pickup, the driving, the park entry, the guiding, the lunch, and the drop-off back at the terminal. You don't need to rent a car, navigate unfamiliar roads, or figure out anything. Your only job is to look out the window.
How It Works: Your Layover Safari, Step by Step
Step 1: Tell us your flight times. WhatsApp or email us your arrival and departure times. We'll tell you which safari fits your window โ half-day, full-day, or overnight.
Step 2: We collect you. Our guide meets you at the airport (or your airport hotel). Door-to-door, no taxis, no confusion.
Step 3: The safari. Within an hour or two you're in genuine Big Five territory with a qualified FGASA guide who knows exactly where to look. Expect elephants, giraffe, zebra, and with some luck, lions and rhinos.
Step 4: Back to the airport. We get you back to OR Tambo with comfortable time before your next flight. Luggage can stay in the vehicle โ safe, secure, handled.

This is what's sitting two hours from the airport. Some layovers change your whole trip.
Which Safari Fits Your Layover?

| 10โ12 hours | Dinokeng Full-Day Big Five | Full game drive, lunch in the reserve, more time for sightings |
| 12+ hours | Pilanesberg Big Five Day | The flagship โ full day in the volcanic crater reserve, the best sighting odds |
| Overnight layover | Overnight Bush Getaway | Evening game drive, lodge dinner, dawn drive, back to airport for your morning flight |
Not sure which fits? Just send us your flight details and we'll figure it out for you. We do this every week.

What About My Luggage?
This is the question everyone asks second. Your bags stay in the vehicle, locked and secure, for the entire trip. We collect you with your luggage at the airport, drive with it, and hand you back at departures with everything exactly where it was. No lockers, no storage fees, no stress.
Who Books Airport Safari Tours?
You'd be surprised how varied our airport guests are:
International travellers on a layover between connecting flights โ the classic. You were passing through anyway; now you've got the best story on the plane home.
Business travellers with a free day between meetings. A morning safari and an afternoon in the boardroom โ it's more common than you think.
Couples on a longer trip who want to add a quick Big Five experience without rearranging their whole itinerary. Half a day, a lifetime of memories.
Families arriving or departing who want to start (or end) their South African holiday with a bang. Kids especially love it โ read our family safari guide for tips.
Solo travellers looking for something genuinely unforgettable to fill a transit day. You'll join a small group and leave with new friends and extraordinary photos.
Why Book With Us (Not a Random Airport Desk)
There are people selling "safari tours" in the arrivals hall. Here's why those aren't the same thing:
We go to real Big Five reserves, not fenced parks. Dinokeng and Pilanesberg are genuine wilderness. You're seeing wild animals in their actual habitat, not a zoo with bigger enclosures.
Door-to-door, airport to airport. We meet you, we drive you, we bring you back. No transfers to arrange, no taxis to find.
Professional FGASA-qualified guides. Not a driver who "also does tours." A trained guide who reads tracks, knows animal behaviour, and will find things you'd drive straight past.
4.9 stars, over 2,500 reviews. This is what we do, every day, and we're trusted with people's most important days. Read our guide to choosing the best safari operator.
Halaal, vegetarian and all dietary needs handled as standard. Just tell us when you book.
Proudly LGBTQ+ owned and friendly. Every guest is welcome, every time.

First Time on Safari? What to Expect
If you've never been on a game drive before, don't worry โ that's most of our airport guests. We've written a complete hour-by-hour walk-through of your first safari day so you know exactly what to pack, wear and expect. For the quick version: dress in neutral colours, bring a camera, and prepare to have the best day of your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I really do a safari and make my connecting flight? Yes. We time every trip precisely around your flights. Our half-day option works with layovers as short as six to eight hours. We've never made anyone miss a flight.
How do I book if I'm already at the airport? WhatsApp us. We can often arrange a same-day or next-morning pickup if we have availability. The earlier you message, the better โ but last-minute enquiries are always welcome.
Do I need malaria medication? No. Dinokeng and Pilanesberg are both malaria-free, which is one of the reasons we use them for airport safaris.
Is it safe? Completely. You're with a qualified guide in a proper safari vehicle at all times. These are well-managed national reserves with excellent safety records.
Can you handle a group from the same flight? Absolutely โ we coordinate multiple vehicles for groups of any size. One pick-up, one amazing day.
What if my flight is delayed? We monitor your flight. If it's delayed, we adjust the pickup time. If the delay is too long for the planned safari, we'll work out an alternative before you've even landed.
Don't Waste Your Layover in the Terminal
You are sitting in one of the only major airports on earth that's a short drive from a genuine Big Five safari. Most people fly through Johannesburg and never realise what's out there, two hours up the road, waiting to be seen.
Don't be most people.
Send me your flight times and I'll tell you exactly which safari fits your window, what it costs, and how easy it is. You'll be back at the gate on time, with a camera full of elephants and a story that will make everyone on your next flight jealous.
At the airport right now? Message us โ we can often arrange a pickup today.
