Not everyone has a whole day to spare — and you do not need one to have a proper safari. My dear, the half-day safari is the best-kept secret in Johannesburg. It is our most affordable way into the bush, it is quick, and it still delivers the real thing: a qualified guide, a malaria-free Big Five reserve, and that heart-stopping moment when something enormous steps out of the trees in front of you.
I started offering half-day safaris because so many people told me the same thing: "Thabo, I would love to go, but I just do not have a full day." So we built a trip around that. You are collected in the morning, you spend the best game-viewing hours out in the reserve, and you are back in the city by lunch or early afternoon — your whole day is not gone. Here is everything you need to know.

What is a half-day safari?
Exactly what it sounds like: a safari that takes half a day instead of a full one. We collect you early (the morning is when the animals are most active), drive you to a malaria-free Big Five reserve within easy reach of Johannesburg, and put you on a guided game drive during the golden hours. Then we bring you home. No overnight bag, no full-day commitment — just the best few hours of wildlife viewing, done properly.
It is perfect if you:
- Only have a morning free but still want to see the Big Five.
- Want the most affordable way to experience a real safari from Johannesburg.
- Have young kids or older parents who do a shorter day more comfortably.
- Are on a tight schedule — a layover, a work trip, a packed itinerary.
- Want to test the waters before committing to a full-day or overnight safari.

Where you go
Our half-day safaris run in Dinokeng Game Reserve — a genuine Big Five, malaria-free reserve less than an hour and a half from Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is the closest proper Big Five bush to the city, which is exactly why it works so well for a short trip: less time on the road, more time with the animals.
Because Dinokeng is malaria-free, there are no tablets to worry about and it is completely safe for children and older travellers. You still have a real chance at lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and a huge variety of plains game and birds.
What is included
- Door-to-door pickup and drop-off from your Johannesburg or Pretoria address or hotel.
- Return transport in a comfortable, air-conditioned closed vehicle.
- A guided game drive in the reserve with an experienced, FGASA-qualified guide.

Even on a half-day, encounters like this are exactly what you came for.
A typical half-day morning
- Early morning: We collect you from your door while the city is still quiet. The early start is worth it — dawn is prime game-viewing time.
- Mid-morning: You arrive at the reserve and head out on your guided game drive, tracking wildlife while the animals are most active and the light is beautiful.
- Late morning: More sightings, your guide sharing stories and knowledge, time to take it all in and get your photos.
- Lunchtime / early afternoon: We drive you home, and you still have the rest of your day. Many guests go straight on with lunch plans or an afternoon in the city.
(Afternoon half-day departures can sometimes be arranged too — just ask and we will see what works for your date.)
Half-day vs full-day — which should you pick?
Here is my honest steer:
- Choose the half-day if time or budget is tight, if you have very young children or older travellers, or if you simply want a brilliant few hours in the bush without giving up the whole day. It is also the perfect "first safari" taster.
- Choose the full day if you want the most time with the animals, a longer drive, lunch in or near the reserve, and the bigger Pilanesberg landscape. See our best Big Five day trips from Johannesburg and our one-day Pilanesberg guide for the full-day versions.
Either way, you are in safe, experienced hands — and either way, you will see the bush.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a half-day safari? Roughly half a day door to door — an early-morning collection and a return around lunchtime or early afternoon, depending on your pickup location.
Will I really see the Big Five on a half-day? Dinokeng is a genuine Big Five reserve, so the animals are all there. Wildlife is wild and nothing is guaranteed on any safari, but the morning hours give you the best possible chance — and our guides know where to look.
Is it malaria-free and safe for kids? Yes — Dinokeng is malaria-free, so no tablets, and it is a great, gentle introduction to safari for children and grandparents. See our safari with kids guide.
Can you collect me from my hotel or home? Yes — door-to-door pickup and drop-off across Johannesburg and Pretoria is included.
Can I book a half-day at short notice? Often, yes. Message us with your date and we will tell you honestly what is available — we do plenty of last-minute trips.
What should I bring? Comfortable clothes, a warm layer for the early start, sunscreen, a hat and your camera. See our safari packing list.
